THE DMZ ACADEMY

North Korea, 2017

The DMZ Academy was an attempt at the first-ever contemporary arts symposium and workshop in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), from August 26th to September 4th, 2017.

7 international contemporary artists and curators from Austria, Barents Region, China, France, Germany, Norway and United Kingdom joined (North) Korean colleagues from the country’s highest institution of fine arts education, the Pyongyang University of Fine Arts.

10 days of work demonstrations, censorship, individual and collective paranoia, nuclear tests, artist talks, literal culture clashes, central planning and flashes of cultural and spiritual exchange and on-the-spot inspiration are chronicled in full-length documentary film THE WAR OF ART, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Gulliksen and produced by Norsk Fjernsyn (N) and StoryHouse (DE/US), with its international TV premiere in the fall of 2018.

The DMZ Academy is supported by Arts Council Norway (NO) and Prince Claus Fund (NL).
