Mary Sun Kim

Researcher and Coordinator - East Asia and North America

Mary Sun Kim is an arts and literature researcher, interpreter, and photographer who uses language, both visual and textual, to communicate with the world. Born and educated in America, growing up in South Korea, and now living in Belgium, Sun came to understand the importance of communication from early on. And the challenge of being displaced helped her develop a sensitive approach to cultural differences while capturing the precise meaning of what is being communicated. Since their fortuitous meeting at a rest stop on the way to the DMZ in 2012, this approach is what grounds Sun’s collaborations with Morten Traavik and North Koreans in music, theatre, and art productions in Europe and the DPRK.
